Heading Home. Bringing Others.

Tithes

Tithing is a primary expression of stewardship to God. Tithing isn’t a way to earn God’s love—because we already have it, whether we tithe or not. Tithing wasn’t put in place for God’s benefit—He already owns everything. He doesn’t need our money. Tithes help pay the pastor’s salary, keep the church’s lights on, and help the church actively meet the needs of others in the community.

But more importantly, tithing is an act of faith that keeps our priorities straight. It reminds us that we don’t own anything in this life. God is in control, and we’re only managers of what He’s given us. God gives us the blessing of being able to work, earn, save, spend, and accumulate wealth. We do this for our children and for ourselves. Sacrificing a portion of our income helps us look outside ourselves and makes us more aware of the needs of others.

When we tithe, we place God as our first priority, and trust in God’s abundance instead of worrying about not having enough. But we also do it in awe of the holiness of God to honor Him as faithful stewards, giving back from what we have earned so that the church can do meaningful work for God in the world.

Offerings

Offerings are an act of worship above and beyond tithing and provide believers added opportunity to respond in gratitude to the grace, love, and mercy of God. Offerings of God’s gifts of time, talent, and treasure reflect a faithful response to Christ’s call to minister to and share with others in the world.

God promises to bless us when we give—that blessing may be spiritual enrichment or the joy of being used by God. Giving an offering is a way of opening ourselves to be God’s opportunity of help and love for another person. We place ourselves in God’s design for giving and receiving from one another. God doesn’t care if we have two pennies or two million dollars. When we give according to what we have, we please him with an offering from the heart.
